Despite it's transgressions, the dominate European nation has overcome major challenges to assert itself as a world leader and mediator of mulitlateral issues. The pain experienced by the warring nations of WWII which has recently marked a 67 year anniversary of the German forces capitulation, remains a surfacing topic among many of the European continent. Large federally granted commissions exist today today that locate and identify thousands of soldier's bodies lost during the war. Other frequent reminders of a war only a few generations in our past are munititions that occaisionally wash upon shore and are often associated with injury from contaminated phosphorous or other material that is harmfully reactive with oxygen exposure.
The preoccupation for most of the country however is atuned to meaningful issues facing the once strongly held government of president Angela Merkel. And in part, the economic future of the European Union for which Germany holds great sway in coursing the path of additional assistance for the weakened, debt laden countries. The government's preference is seemingly to take a passive stance on any further engagement in bailing out troubled given the extent of Germany's efforts thus far. Yet refraining to coalese with the larger European Central Bank is likely to have a Catch 22 effect where detrimental impacts could be felt if further action to rescue it's ailing neighboors isn't carried out. On the cultural agenda though for a country that likes to celebrate, their esteemed Bayern Munich claimed the UEFA soccer championship recently.
