An Edgy Rock Talent to Listen To

June 2013

If you were to take a few minutes to look at the band called 'The Whigs' facebook page you’d notice the eclectic vibe that seems to embody the personality of these three guys who have been putting out a harmonious blend of college rock and alternative music for the last ten years. Their sound seems to hint at a mild Nirvana feel while also encompassing a far deeper lineage of influence such as Led Zeplin, Ozzy Osburne, Wilco and others as evident from the relic photos posted on the band’s webpage. The Whigs are based out of Athens, GA where the pool of musical talent has long been abundant and where an honorary tribute to the town’s former musical stars such as REM, Widespread Panic, and the B-52’s seems to carry a trace of representation within the town's emerging artists.

Hearing the members talk about their musical endeavor is uplifting for the genuine approach that these guys seem to follow in pursuing their talent that has shown to magnificently suit thier ambition and offer what the fans want to hear. They have released four albums with the most recent titled ‘Enjoy the Company’ displaying cover art that speaks of an American image of a hot dog afixed to a plain background.

The seeming simple intonation of their self regarded image as laid back, yet capable of capturing a preponderance of attention is on point with the big touring schedule that they just finished. They hit many east coast spots during March including the StopOver Festival in Savannah, Memphis, Vermont, Boston, NYC (where also they appeared for the fourth time on David Letterman) and eight other locations.

The range of musical style that they can offer is evident in the disparate touring acts that they have been paired with including legendary punk band Bad Religion and a series of dates with the Georgia rock group Driven & Cryin. Look for them on their late Spring tour in select cities before their four day run at the Wakarusa Music Festival in the Ozarks of Arkansas.
